What rights should be protected for students and teachers?

What rights should be protected for students and teachers? The answer should be that everyone no

matter their profession should have the same rights. That being said, it should be no different for a student

or a teacher. For example the first amendment of freedom of speech, religion, protest, and press is not an

amendment that most teachers or students would say they have. Most teachers are not allowed to voice

their thoughts in the classroom without parents or the district getting upset. For protest many students and

teachers could risk getting in trouble or fired for participating in a protest because it may be frowned upon.

If you look back at court cases in our country's history, many have to do with rights being taken away from

students and teachers in the educational system. For example the court case Westside Community

School vs. Mergens of 1990 was a case about a group of students who got denied for trying to start a

religious school club. Religion is a right that these students did not have in their school. As for teachers

on top of having many rights be taken away from them without even knowing they also face the majority

of people disrespecting their profession. Many people look down on the teaching profession especially

since teaching is not a well paying career. I personally think teachers should be paid more! Teachers will

always be needed because everyone has to go to school from kindergarten through senior year. Teachers

also have many duties throughout the day and are always in the eyes of the community. Teachers and

students are people just like everyone else and they deserve much more than what they get. They

deserve equality when it comes to rights and pay. All rights should be protected for students and teachers

each and every day.

  1. Hi Chesney, thank you for contributing to this weeks discussion! I agree that everyone, no matter their status, race, background, etc, should receive equal rights and protection of their rights in any circumstance. I feel as if teachers are held to a higher standard in society, and this may be why what they can and can't say or do is more limited. Many people view teachers as one of the biggest influences throughout their child's lives, so it doesn't surprise me all that much when you say parents and the school districts tend to get upset about teachers voicing out their opinions. It's interesting to see how certain rights seem to be more important or valued than others. For example, the Westside Community School v Mergens went against the school administration and defended the students religious rights and approved religious clubs and activities, where in the Santa Fe Independent School District v Doe case, prayer before a football game is denied because of parent complaints. I think that to have rights for students and teachers, everyone must first be on the same page of what these rights are. Great post!

    1. Thank you for the comment Madison Walsh! I agree that teachers have a huge impact on students life and that is why they are more in the eye of people. That being said they do have a personal life and i am sure it is hard having to manage both to make students, parents, administration, and themselves satisfied. I do think if students want to pray before a game or start a club they should be able to and if some students would like to not do that they should be able to as well.

  2. Hi Chesney, your post explains pretty much why we teachers and students should have protected rights. Since parents and students see their teachers as inspirational and as a role model, I think this is where teachers should also educate their students that their voice matters. I also think this is where parents become upset when their child comes home talking about a new concept they learned from history that has to do with fighting for their own rights but I think that is a good thing! Therefore it is insane for school administration to limit teachers abilities in the classroom because they are teaching valuable lessons that prepare students for their future. I do also agree with you about people knocking down the teaching career, but I see teachers doing the best they can trying to cope with new educational standards and pushing their limits to make sure all of their students get a fair education. I feel like this also ties in to the last module with equal rights for female teachers and the salary. We are definitely sill pushing to be seen just as important as higher professions. Do you have any thoughts about specific rights for students?

    1. Hi Reanna thank you for commenting! I agree that students should be taught that their voice matters because they matter. When they know that what they feel is important they will feel that they are important. I do not have any thoughts on specific rights for students I do just believe that everyone should have the same rights. We are trying to have an equal society and that starts with rights.
