What makes great teaching?
What makes great teaching? Personally I would say the teacher is what makes great teaching. I say this because teachers are given a long list of items that need to be taught to students each year. As years go on the list changes and so do the students. Great teaching comes from a great teacher. Teachers have a difficult job for creating lesson plans that help each student learn the material, providing a safe space, and many other task that can go unseen. Teachers make an impact each day on the next generations each day. Great teaching comes from teachers who love their job and can not wait to see engagement in their classroom. Teachers that take the time to get to know their students also plays a role in great teaching because if you know what is interesting to a student that might not be engaged in class you can alter the material. In reading small groups if you know a student is interested in dance you could find a book to read about dance to help the student become interested in learning. I personally believe teachers that provide respect in the classroom also helps make great teaching. I think respect plays a large role in the classroom when a teacher shows respect to all student it shows equality amongst the students and promotes respect amongst peers. Great teaching is going to be seen differently to all but as a future educator i have my own views about great teaching and this is them!
Hi Chesney!
ReplyDeleteYou make some really great points! Teachers truly do so much for their students everyday. I agree that great teachers get to know all of their students on an individual basis. In doing this, teachers can learn what they need to do to meet the students’ needs when it comes to learning. Every student learns differently, and it is important for teachers to recognize this and be prepared to make changes to lessons when necessary. I agree that this can also be a great way for teachers to incorporate student interests into the classroom. Doing all of these things helps the students feel safe and welcome in their classroom, which I think is key to successful learning and teaching. I love that you made the point that respect is so important in the classroom. Teachers need to have respect for all of their students and of their thoughts and opinions. It is important for teachers to encourage their students to speak out in the classroom and provide opportunities for them to do so. Great post!

Hey Lauren thanks for taking time to comment on my post and add your input! Its a great way to continue the conversation Teachers do so much and truly deserve more appreciation than they get. I am a truly believer that every children learns differently and from you said i can see you are too. Being a student who grew up with dyslexia I loved classes that the teacher taught in a variety of ways. Like you said this does make students feel more comfortable and welcomed in their classroom. Students spend so much time at school it is important that they can be themselves and feel at home at school. Also I think respect plays a huge role in classrooms. When a teacher has respect for their students it shows the students that they matter. It also provides guidance to show students to respect their peers and other adults.

ReplyDeleteKnowing your students and developing some kind of relationship with them is foundational for great teaching. Once you know your students and know what works for them and what kind of activities they respond well with I believe from that point on you can format lessons that can feel more like games to students even if they are content heavy. Building that relationship really does help set the ground for students having an environment in your classroom that allows them to feel safe enough to come to you if they don't understand something. I personally have seen classrooms were that wasn't the case and the entire attitude of the class is different when students feel like they may be ridiculed for asking a teacher to reexplain something or elaborate on a problem. When you know your classroom well formatting assignments and being able to adapt them for students who need more help is a sign of great teaching in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteHey Chesney, first and for most I want to say that I can not agree with you more. I also believe that great teaching stems from a teacher who is passionate and hounds true his in their job. My mom is one of the big influences that I had when I decided to be a teacher and she to this day has said she will continue teaching until she stops loving it, and I think that is something that every teacher should live by because no matter the curriculum or type is student wants through your door, you are there to make a difference in the words and create a classroom the fosters learning for years to come.
